Entrepreneur of the Year

June 11, 2009 - APi Group, Inc., a parent company for 33 construction and fire protection businesses, today announced that Lee R. Anderson Sr., Chairman, received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2009 Award in the master category in the Upper Midwest region. According to Ernst & Young LLP, the award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses. Anderson was selected by an independent panel of judges, and the award was presented at a gala event at the Pfister Hotel on Thursday, June 11, 2009.

“I am very honored to receive this award,” Anderson said. “It's a very nice recognition after many years of business.”

A.P.I. Inc. was established in 1926 as a small insulation contracting and distribution division of the mechanical company Reuben L. Anderson-Cherne. Anderson became president of the family business in 1964.

Under his leadership, Anderson diversified the company within the construction and construction-related industries. He expanded into key markets, establishing both a national and international presence. The company became APi Group Inc. in 1997.

Today, APi Group owns more than 33 independently managed businesses, reaching about 9,000 employees. With more than 150 locations, APi Group's billion-dollar success has landed the company in Forbes Magazine's Top 400 Private Companies, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal's Top 100 Private Companies, and Twin Cities Business Top 25 Private Companies.

“I can honestly say I'm a more effective leader today and Jamar is a more successful company because of our association with APi Group,” said Mike McParlan, president of the Jamar Company, a subsidiary of APi Group.

“Being part of APi Group carries with it a higher stature of confidence that inherently comes with the level of respect and substance that APi has built its reputation on over the many years. It also creates a strong sense of security, in that you're part of a supporting infrastructure with the purpose to be the best in the business,” said Lloyd Bushong, president of Industrial Contractors, a subsidiary of APi Group.

APi Group is one of the largest union subcontractors in the U.S. It is the largest fire protection group of companies in Canada, and the second largest in the U.S.

The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year awards celebrate their 23rd anniversary this year. The program honors entrepreneurs who have demonstrated exceptionality in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.

“We are proud to recognize the achievements of Lee Anderson,” said Kevin Klimara, Ernst & Young Partner, Strategic Growth Markets. “Winners of the Entrepreneur Of The Year award build leading businesses and contribute significantly to the strength of our region's economy. Their success helps our area grow stronger.”

As an Upper Midwest award winner, Anderson is now eligible for consideration for the Ernst & Young LLP Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009 national program.
