APi Construction begins large environmental retrofit porject at Allen S. King Plant in Bayport, Minnesota
Built in the mid-1960's, the King Plant is equipped with a cyclone boiler that produces more than 500 megawatts of electricity. The 30+ year old boiler is 20 stories high and is one of the few boilers of its vintage in the nation that has not been retired in recent years. In fact, the unit continues to perform exceptionally well. In addition to generating electricity the King Plant supplies process steam to neighboring Andersen Windows and steam heat for the nearby Minnesota Correctional Facility via a steam line system.
This 18 month environmental retrofit project started in September, 2005 and is part of the Minnesota Metro Emissions Reduction Project (MERP). MERP is a voluntary program that will significantly cut sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 90 percent using state-of-the-art emissions controls. The project includes the addition of an air quality control system comprised of a selective catalytic reactor, two spray dry absorbers, a fabric filter, induced draft fans, a new steam turbine and major boiler rehabilitation.
APi’s part in this large endeavor is to provide and install all of the project’s insulation, lagging and siding materials. This will include over 640,000 square feet of insulation and lagging for the project’s selective catalytic reactor (SCR) equipment, the two spray dry absorbers (SDAs), the fabric filter, the new steam turbine along with the associated flue gas ductwork and miscellaneous equipment including that insulation and lagging required for the existing boiler retrofit repairs. Additionally, APi will be supplying and installing mineral wool and calcium silicate pipe insulation with aluminum jacketing for over 23,000 lineal feet of project piping. Finally, APi has been tasked with the supply and installation of approximately 136,000 square feet of insulated siding and roofing for the project’s equipment, stair tower and walkway enclosures. APi has teamed with Xcel Energy to maximize efficiency by installing, wherever possible, ductwork insulation systems at ground level prior to erection in place.
The first outage, completed this fall, presented many coordination and scheduling challenges associated with the installation of the new SCR transition ductwork and the tie-ins to the existing flue gas system. APi Construction Company performed beyond expectations during this outage, working many hours of overtime to deliver the project on time.
