APi Construction earns distinguished safety award
The award is NIA's top industry honor for outstanding dedication to safety performance. It is designed to recognize NIA members who take proactive steps to implement safe work environments. APi's Vice Presidents, Jerry Pederson and Mark Udager, accepted the award in April.
"Receiving this award for the second year in a row, is a great achievement for our employees and truly demonstrates everyone's continued support and commitment to work safely every day," Pederson said.
The NIA determines winners based on safety programs and policies, safety statements, new employee orientations, daily jobsite safety compliance, safety incentive programs, and disciplinary action programs.
APi's safety program, STEPS (Striving Toward Excellence and Professionalism in Safety), promotes safety culture awareness throughout the company. STEPS is a living program that constantly seeks improvement to reduce the risk of injuries.
Samples of prevention initiatives include a daily stretching program, the use of blunt-head insulation pins, advanced eye protection and comprehensive daily huddles to encourage safety alertness. The result: a TRIR of 1.8 for the second consecutive year, significantly lower than the industry average.
The Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award is named after former NIA president in recognition of his dedication and commitment to safety.
