APi Construction secures major turnkey power project

June 7, 2010 - June 7, 2010 - APi Construction Co. was recently awarded a turnkey insulation and lagging contract to work on the country's largest coal-fired power plant currently under construction. Once completed in 2012, the Prairie State Generating Campus will be a 1,600-megawatt side-by-side coal-fired power plant in downstate Illinois, capable of supplying electricity to more than two million homes.

The contract with Bechtel Power will likely be the largest ever for APi Construction, and one of the largest in the history of APi Group Inc., parent company of APi Construction.

"We are very pleased with the timing of this project, but we are most excited about the opportunity to extend our working relationship with Bechtel Power at one of their major construction projects," said Vice President of Construction Mark Udager. APi is nearing successful completion of a similar two-year project with Bechtel Power at the Elm Road Generating Station in Oak Creek, Wis.

The scope of work at Prairie State includes insulating more than one million square feet of industrial equipment including: two massive 800-megawatt Babcock & Wilcox coal-fired boilers and SCRs, two Toshiba steam turbine generators, two Siemens dry electrostatic precipitators (ESP), four Howden induced draft fans, and the associated ductwork. In addition, APi will insulate the balance of plant piping systems, boiler piping, and two Siemens wet-ESP piping systems.

By the time both units are running, APi will have installed 1.2 million square feet of insulation and lagging and more than 22 miles of insulation and pipe jacketing.

For more than 20 years, Senior Project Manager Bob Miller has worked for APi and ran some of the company's largest projects, including the near complete Elm Road project. Miller is responsible for working with Bechtel Power to manage the work at Prairie State.

"In these uncertain economic times we are very fortunate to have secured a two year long project of this magnitude," Miller said. "APi is excited about executing this project safely and successfully."

APi anticipates it will employ more than 100 Union craftspeople from the St. Louis and mid-Illinois area including sheet metal workers, insulators, boilermakers, carpenters, and laborers. APi's work on the project will begin in July and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
