API EARNS NATIONAL SAFETY AWARD
APi earns national safety award
November 29, 2010 - November 29, 2010 - On behalf of the APi Group Safety and Risk Management department, Shawn Helmer and Kristin Heizman were honored with the Gary E. Bird Horizon Award at the 30th IRMI Construction Risk Conference. The award recognized APi Group for its Striving Towards Excellence and Professionalism in Safety (STEPS) program.
"It was an honor to accept this award on behalf of the employees at APi Group," said Helmer, director of Risk Management. "Our STEPS program has generated phenomenal results and we can all be proud of it."
STEPS is a compilation of industry best practices that focuses on loss prevention and incident reduction through measurable objectives. The initial intent of the program was to provide APi Group's 36 subsidiaries with a program focused on incident reduction and mitigation of losses.
Since the inception of STEPS, the EMR reduced from .75 to .60 (a reduction of 20 percent). Every OSHA record-keeping statistic has had significant reductions as well. The OSHA Frequency Rate has decreased from 1.6 to 0.4 (a 75 percent reduction), and the OSHA Total Recordable Incident Rate has reduced from 5.9 to 3.1 (a 47 percent reduction). Total number of losses reduced from 602 losses in 2005 to 399 losses in 2009 (a 34 percent reduction). It is exceptional to note that the improvement occurred as the risk base increased from nine million hours worked to just under 14 million hours worked (a 56 percent exposure base increase).
"The safety and welfare of each employee is our number one priority," said APi Group CEO and President, Russell Becker. "It is the combined effort of the entire team that makes winning awards, such as this, possible. I'm very proud of everyone."
The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award is presented annually by IRMI to recognize a demonstrated commitment to improving construction risk management through the implementation of innovative, cost-effective, and efficient risk management techniques.
"I am impressed with this firm's relentless effort to strive for excellence and professionalism in their loss control program. It proves that when people are challenged they can deliver a great result," said one judge from the panel of industry experts that judged the award submissions.
"I sincerely believe STEPS has and will continue to be a game-changer for our organization," Helmer said.
Past recipients include Rosendin Electric Inc., Comfort Systems USA and CF Jordan LP. The other finalists for the award were Hampton Roads Transit, CF Jordan LP, Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc., and Morley Builders.
