LEJEUNE PROVIDES STEEL FOR TARGET FIELD

With a view of the downtown Minneapolis skyline, LeJeune Steel puts the finishing touch on the structural steel of the Twins’ Target Field by May 2009.

Target Field is predicted to be the premier sporting and entertainment venue in the Upper Midwest and the most unique, spectacular park in all of Major League Baseball. The ballpark is one million total square feet and holds seating for 40,000 fans.

“As a Minneapolis company, we were thrilled to be awarded this marquee project for the hometown Twins,” said LeJeune Project Manager Stephen Prince.

On schedule for its grand opening in spring 2010, the project, awarded to LeJeune in November 2007 by MA Mortenson, includes connection engineering, structural steel detailing, fabrication, field erection, miscellaneous metals, and field touch-up painting.

“LeJeune has been a solid, consistent partner working through numerous challenging design, construction and market issues on one of the most complicated projects Mortenson has built,” said Mortenson Construction Executive Dan Mehls.

LeJeune collaborated with sister company Wisconsin Structural Steel and other local fabricators to provide the entire 4,900 tons of structural steel framing needed for the Target Field.

According to the Twins’ official website, Target Field will feature one of the closest seating bowls to the playing field in Major League Baseball. LeJeune has fabricated more than 2,000 tons of structural steel to support the Club Level, Suite Level, and upper deck seating, and 1,400 tons to support the outfield concourses and grandstand seating.

In September ’08, LeJeune began framing for the Target Field’s roof canopy – the largest in baseball. The canopy will act as a sunshade and protect fans during adverse weather.

Three-hundred tons of LeJeune’s steel will support the fourth largest scoreboard in Major League Baseball, and another 800 tons of various structures to accent the ballpark.

“LeJeune’s detailers, engineers, fabricators, and subcontractors worked tirelessly to overcome numerous challenges and obstacles over the course of the last eighteen months, and the result is one of the most gratifying projects LeJeune has ever completed,” said Prince.
