Cristo Rey Jesuit High School

APi Group Companies; LeJeune Steel, Twin City Garage Door Company, Doody Mechanical and Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company are all proud to be associated with the Twin Cities Cristo Rey model Jesuit High School / Colin Powell Center. The $30 million dollar project is a unique collaboration in the Minneapolis Phillips neighborhood between Urban Ventures, the Twin Cities Jesuit High School Project, Ryan Companies and APi Group, Inc.

The building consists of a large gymnasium with four basketball courts, four floors of classrooms, cafeteria and auditorium spaces, and a spacious entry vestibule providing sunlight throughout the building. Radiant floor heating is used with the entry vestibule to help maximize heating efficiency within the space. The three levels of steel framing, including the gymnasium roof's 145 foot long span joists, total 550 tons provided by LeJeune Steel.

Although the project consists of one structure, the High School and The Colin Powell Center are two distinct entities.

The first Cristo Rey High School was built in 1996 in Chicago. Today, there are thirteen inner-city Cristo Rey Jesuit model schools throughout the country, with an average graduation rate of 90 percent. The curriculum is based on a four-day school week. On day five, students work at local business, to help pay their tuition.

The Colin Powell Center will provide a host of services for neighborhood kids and families, whom may not necessarily be attending the High School.

Doody Mechanical and Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company worked with Ryan Companies as part of their design / build team. Working together, the companies of APi Group Inc. have made a coordinated team effort to meet the many design challenges in this unique facility.

Doody Mechanical furnished and installed the full mechanical systems for the project.

The HVAC system consists of a VAV supply with twelve air handling/roof top units bringing in over 275 tons of cooling to the entire building.

Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company designed 1,400 sprinklers for the school. There are four standpipes, one dry system in the underground parking area, five wet systems and a separate system for the window sprinklers in the two-story lobby.

One particular challenge presented by this project was coordinating the ductwork, plumbing and sprinkler piping above the auditorium ceiling. Those efforts have paid off since the installation went well.
