An
exciting safety milestone has recently been achieved by APi
Construction based in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the end of
the first quarter
in 2004, APi Construction surpassed 1,000,000 total hours
worked without a Lost Time Incident.
The path
to this achievement spanned a two-year time frame starting
in 2002. This record
was achieved while performing insulation contractor services
in the industrial sector, of which a majority of the work
was
performed for power plant and paper mill clients throughout
the country.

According
to Tom Wainscott, Safety Director, "This is the first major milestone
on our Journey to Zero. Our goal is to create a culture where
there are zero injuries of any kind."
APi Construction has
always operated under the premise that their employees are
the biggest asset to the organization.
APi has consistently strived to provide a safe workplace
that is free from recognizable and preventable hazards. To
help achieve this goal, APi adopted the following best safety
practices. • Demonstrated management
commitment
• Staffing for safety
• Safety planning – pre-project / pre-task
• Safety training and education
• Worker involvement and participation
• Recognition and rewards
• Accident / Incident reporting and investigation
• Drug and Alcohol testing According
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
the rate of non fatal occupational injury and incident
average is
4.3 for special trade contractors. This
means that there are on average 4.3 loss work day cases
per 200,000 man
hours
worked. APi Construction worked over five times that
amount of man hours without having any loss work day cases!
This
kind of safety performance does not mysteriously happen
on its own; it takes teamwork, dedication, and a
commitment by all disciplines to realize the result above-mentioned.
APi Group, Inc. has established a zero Lost Time Incident
Goal
for all APi Member Companies and we are extremely proud
of
APi Construction for achieving this most significant
milestone and the effort it took to make this goal a reality.
We
congratulate you on a job well done! |
