APi CONSTRUCTION COMPANY IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON UNIT 3 AT TUCSON ELECTRIC POWER'S SPRINGERVILLE GENERATING STATION

Springerville 400 Mega Watt Power Generating Station
APi Construction Company is currently working on Unit 3 at Tucson Electric Power's 400 Mega Watt Coal Power Generating Station in Springerville, Arizona. Overall project construction is more than 50 percent complete and proceeding ahead of schedule toward an anticipated start-up date in the third quarter of 2006.

With significant advancements in control technologies and equipment to limit emissions, today's super-clean, high-efficiency power plants like Unit 3, have made coal a viable energy source. Coal is relatively cheap and plentiful. We have more coal in the United States than any other country which makes us the "Saudi Arabia" of coal.

Unit 3 will use new technology to limit emissions, including dry scrubbers for sulfur dioxide reduction, selective catalytic reduction and low NOx burners to control oxides of nitrogen, and baghouses to capture particulates. Fly ash and bottom ash byproducts from the coal combustion process will be collected and stored on-site in sealed landfill facilities.

In addition to Unit 3 other work on this project will upgrade the emission control equipment on existing facilities at Units 1 and 2. The plan includes upgrading existing sulfur dioxide scrubber systems and installing improved low-nitrogen oxide burners on those units.

With this new equipment, total combined emissions from all three units will be significantly less than previous emissions from the two existing units.

APi Construction's project scope includes: insulation & lagging work on the boiler, ductwork, piping, SCR, SDA and baghouse. This 8-month project involves over 100 skilled craftsmen.

To appreciate the shear size of this project, consider that at the project conclusion APi will have provided and installed the following:

  • 400,000 pounds of sheet metal lagging and flashing
  • 60 truckloads of blanket insulation
  • 46,000 lineal feet of pipe insulation
APi Construction Company's scope of work at Springerville includes the complete insulation and lagging of:
  • Boiler
  • Dry scrubbers
  • SCR equipment
  • Baghouse
