Everyday
millions of people are living, building, and relocating to
remote areas there by creating more potential for destruction
by wildfires. A wildfire can spread quickly and
cause devastation; destroying homes, property, environment
and lives.
Western
States Fire Protection can help you protect your loved ones
and your investments. They use
the same safe, powerful and effective fire retardant used
by fire authorities.
Western
States Fire Protection installs and services Firebreak
wildfire protection systems.

Firebreak Spray
Systems is a unique preemptive wildfire protection
system designed for installation during
new home
construction or retrofitted to an existing structure. Firebreak
protects the home and exterior grounds.
Firebreak
systems can be activated manually or by phone - using a security
code.
It may also be automatically activated by a wildfire
detection and communication system such as the FireALERT
monitor.
Once the
system is activated, the fire retardant covers the house
and surrounding perimeter in minutes.
Western States
Fire Protection is the exclusive distributor of Firebreak Spray
Systems Depending on your use and need, we offer three distinct
installations:
- Basic
120 Manual - The basic 120-gallon manual fire retardant tank
is about the size of a large water heater and may be installed
in the HVAC, garage or other storage areas.
- New Residential
Construction & Retrofit
- A unique pre-emptive wildfire protection system designed
for installation during new
home construction, or retrofitted to an existing structure.
- Canyon
/ Perimeter Fire Protection - The canyon protection system
is designed to help protect homes and structures built
on or near the ridge of canyons and draws.

Firebreak
spray systems use liquid fire retardant similar to the material
mixed with red dye that’s used by aerial bombers fighting
wildfires each year. While foam only provides protection
four to six hours, the Firebreak spray can last days or weeks,
depending on the weather and clean-up
is easier. It’s non-toxic and biodegradable because
it’s fertilizer based. It’s the fire retardant
of choice of the U.S. Forest Service. The
retardant has a shelf life exceeding 20 years.
A
120 gallon tank that stores the retardant goes into the
garage of the home, similar to a water heater, but smaller.
It can
be plumbed with a new home and be nearly invisible, or
existing homes can be retrofitted. The retardant must be
stored with
a water source.
The source is powered by a nitrogen cylinder
because in a wildfire, electricity may be the first service
to fail. The system is completely independent of water
supply and has no tie to municipal water systems.

Perimeter Protection Using Canyon Cannons
|
If desired,
a homeowner can provide themselves perimeter protection
by having Firebreak canyon cannons installed around the area
to be protected.
Because
of topography, canyon fires have a funnel like affect on
fire behavior and are responsible for multiple structure
losses every year. Many homeowner associations are now requiring
the homeowner to create defensible space up to 200 feet down
from the ridge of the canyon.
Water cannons
can be mounted in brick columns or under eaves and fascia.
They can soak into
the soil and vegetation up to 200 feet. Normally, 30 feet
to 70 feet are recommended for defensible space around a home. This
method can also be utilized to shoot retardant back toward a
structure for coverage.

Protection Piping in New Construction
|
With
new construction the pre-emptive wildfire protection system
is piped in the most reasonable place to be concealed and best
protect the structure.
In this case copper pipe was used and
piped with a loop around the perimeter of the roof. The systems
typically begin in a mechanical room or other heated area within
the home.

Nozzles can
be installed within beams to better conceal the system.

Black
Poly Tubing on Existing Structure
|
On
existing homes and structures black poly tubing can be run
along the eve line of the home and tucked under small overhangs
as shown on this house.
The poly tubing is very durable and can withstand mountain weather
and intense UV rays from the sun. |

Here you see the retardant being deployed through the retrofitted
system. These nozzles spray about a 12-15 feet and are great
for installing on existing structures.
Western States Fire Protection recommends an annual inspection
of the Firebreak system to ensure everything
is in good working order prior to the beginning of the wildfire
season.
The Firebreak system is pressure tested and inspected under applicable codes. |

FireALERT
Systems use GPS Capability
|
FireALERT is
a wildfire detection system that can see wildfires up to six
miles away. It uses Global Positioning System (GPS) capability
that, during a fire, provides the location of both the system
and the bearing of the fire to the fire department or home owner.
It can automatically turn on the Firebreak protection system.
FireALERT
systems are able to detect the difference between campfires
and barbecues by the amount of carbon dioxide given off.
They can detect wildfires whether it's night, day, cloudy
or sunny.
The system
also reports on its own health. A wildfire detector will
tell you if it is stolen or hit by lightning.
FireALERT
Wildfire Detection Monitor
|
FireALERT
is a division of Ambient
Control Systems for wildfire detection, communication
and activation. The monitors are wireless, self-contained,
light-energized, require no batteries and are maintenance
free. Because they use ambient light, there would have to
be seven days without sun, to lose power. The wildfire detection
monitors have a life expectancy of 20 years. |
