New Bishops' Central Storehouse

April 5, 2012 - Delta Fire Systems, Inc. completes work on the new Bishops' Central Storehouse in Salt Lake City.
The Bishops' Central Storehouse covers more than 500,000 square feet of warehouse storage and is built on a 36-acre site, just miles from the Salt Lake City Airport. The new facility was constructed to meet the needs of the 27,000 Latter-day Saint (LDS) bishops whom serve around the world. It will also help provide welfare needs and humanitarian assistance in times of natural disasters and other emergencies.
The two-story Bishops' Central Storehouse consists of bulk and rack storage areas with 63,000 square feet of freezer, cooler and cold dock. A 23,630-square-foot Deseret Transportation facility, tire storage building and fire pump house are also included on the site.
According to Project Manager Bill Ball, the project was fast paced and complex. Delta designed and installed the building's fire suppression system. It includes 17 wet systems, three Quell double-interlock pre-action systems, one dry system, one Antifreeze system, an AFFF sub-surface foam injection system and a diesel fire pump with two 50,000-gallon underground water storage tanks. Construction on the project lasted one year.
"Special thanks to our General Foreman, Keith Johnson, and to our amazing field crews who completed the project on-time and under budget with absolutely no safety incidents," Ball said.
The Bishops' Central Storehouse was a design-assist project with Layton Construction that utilized Building Information Modeling and an integrated design team approach.
Delta Vice President, Jeff Darr, has worked with Layton for more than 30 years on various projects. He has watched Layton grow from a small regional general contractor to a national and international contractor. Layton is ranked the 63rd largest commercial contractor in the United States and the 210th largest commercial contractor in the world by ENR in 2011.
