Biomass Technology

A significant portion of our construction companies are experienced in biomass technology, AQCS (Air Quality Control Systems) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

According to the National Center for Policy Analysis "Alternative Energy Overview," biomass is energy taken from biological material such as farming wastes, grasses, trees, bark, sawdust and even garbage. Harvesting wood from the forest is the most common form of biomass.

After the wood is cut it's turned into woodchips and burned in the boiler to create energy. It's unlike coal, gas, fossil fuel or any other non-renewable resource. Biomass can substitute for up to 20 percent of the coal used in a boiler, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Many companies that use wood for biomass plant two trees for every one cut down.

Biomass creates potentially harmful particles that travel from the smoke stacks into the air. Fortunately, APi construction companies provide the biomass technology, such as scrubbers and thermal insulation, to prevent such particles from leaving the stacks. Our companies also install large and small bore piping for plants using biomass.

Geothermal Exchange System
geothermal geothermal

In building and construction, geothermal energy is considered to be one of the more efficient forms of heat transfer for heating and cooling applications. In simplest of terms, geothermal energy is energy recovered from heat stored in the earth.

At Great River Energy's new corporate headquarters in Maple Grove, Minn., a core lake water geothermal exchange system was put into place by Metropolitan Mechanical Contractors (formerly Doody Mechanical). Utilizing water to water and water to air heat pumps within the building, this system is benefiting from the free heating and cooling capacity of the earth to keep desired space temperatures within the building for the requirement of each season.

From a sustainability perspective, the installation of a geothermal exchange system reduces the amount of energy required to heat and cool a building. This reduction reduces the demand from the power company and the demand to burn fossil fuels for production.

Each pod contained 14 coils. Each coil represents 1 ton of cooling. The coil pods sit on top of a PVC frame and concrete blocks are located on the bottom to ensure stability on the lake bed floor.

Although, initial first costs are higher with a geothermal exchange system than an air-source system, the payback is returned to the building owner in energy savings throughout the life-cycle or TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of the building.

Nuclear Power Plant Construction

As the second-largest source of electric power in the United States, the demand for nuclear energy is growing much faster than ever before. By 2030, domestic energy demand is projected to grow almost 50 percent while global energy demand is expected to double, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

APi is capable and ready to help improve energy conservation, efficiency, and increase domestic supply. Given the opportunity, we will provide our reliable qualifications with respect to fire protection and specialty construction services in a safe and secure manner to help build, maintain, and service nuclear power plants.

We are a responsible family of companies who are ready to meet the strict requirements set forth by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and its associations. We have the resources to join you in the expansion of nuclear power plant construction across the U.S. and Canada.
